If you’re planning on spending a day out on the trails with friends or family, it’s important to bring all the hiking essentials to keep you comfortable and safe. What you need for your hike differs depending on the distance and time you’ll take. This hiking gear list aims to put forward a solid base for those planning a day hike of around five to ten hours.
Day Pack 15L-30L
Bringing a day pack that can fit all your hiking essentials. Get yourself a day pack that has suitable compartments for the items that you carry. Stay organized and ready for anything.
Headlamp (With extra batteries)
Even if you’re heading out in the early morning, you never know what can happen especially during an emergency situation that can get you caught in the great outdoors late in the evening or night time. In case this happens, you should always have a headlamp on your to guide your way back. Do pack extra batteries with you in a dry bag or a sealed plastic bag.
Survival blanket (Option:Large garbage plastic bag)
Emergency blankets take up little space in your backpack, it is very lightweight, and can keep you warm by efficiently preventing heat loss. Keep one in your backpack and wrap yourself in it if you ever need a way to stay warm.
Zip lock plastic bag (use to keep your handphone/wallet dry)
Never leave your litter behind! Be sensible and take your rubbish with you back down. You may also use it to waterproof your electronics (hand phone and camera)
Disposable rain coat
It is best to have a pack of disposable rain coat because weather is unpredictable, especially in the tropics. It can also become a backpack cover to keep your backpack from dirt and mud.
Gloves (Hiking/Sports Gloves)
Provide protection and a better grip when climbing. Other than that it prevent hands from being injured.
A whistle is your lifeline should you end up injured or stranded – sounding a loud whistle in three LOUD but short bursts will signal to nearby hikers or others that you’re in need of help. Three bursts will help people distinguish your whistling from the hoots and calls of birds in the area. Repeat your three-toot call every so often to signal your need for help.
Personal ration (candy, chocolate bar, maggi etc)
Keep up your energy with yummy snacks on the trail. It’s important to bring the right snacks with you while you trek.
Staying hydrated is incredibly important while you’re hiking! You should always bring a water bottle with you on the trail. You can refill it at the water point along your hike.
Lighter and pocket knife/multi-tool
Maybe you need to open a packet of chips or maybe you need to cut free a tangle of cord from your backpack. You never know what kind of tool you’ll need while you’re hiking, so bring one that can do everything.
Personal medication kit (allergy pills,asthma inhaler etc)
Believe it or not, a lot can go wrong on a day hike. Be prepared for blisters, splinters, cuts, and other blunders with a well-stocked first aid kit. Keep a lightweight first-aid kit in your backpack so that you can whip it out in case of emergency.
